The Story
Launched on 20 May 1972 to mark the tercentenary of the Battle of Sole Bay, Broadside delivers a cannon of bold fruitcake flavours and a taste that’s endured for nearly 50 years! It’s first outing was as a bottled beer.
It’s rich, fruity flavours proved such a hit that demand quickly grew for a
cask version. With a bottle ABV of 6.3%, it was felt that its strength might
prove a barrier, so Adnams’ brewers devised a new recipe in order to
deliver the same rich flavours in a lighter strength beer. Both
incarnations have their devotees and fitty years on, both are still going
great guns

Old Ale – 4.1%

Old Ale is based on one of Adnams’ oldest beer recipes, dating back to 1890. This winter warmer is brewed with East Anglian Pale Ale malt; Crystal malted barley, and First Gold hops, and has flavours of red fruit, roasted grains, and a hint of caramel. It is eagerly anticipated with the change in the seasons and has that warming fireside glow about it.

Old Ale’s style is akin to a mild, so hops play second fiddle to the malt. You’ll find rich aromas of caramel and nutty chocolate, which also come through on the palate along with hints of liquorice and red fruits. This is all balanced by a smooth bitterness that cleanses the palate and makes room for the next sip.

This product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

The Story
For our first true lager, we wanted to give it the appearance of a beer everyone was familiar with, but with the twist of more fruit- driven hops. We did several trials on our pilot brew kit to try to get the right balance, before settling on this recipe. Our Jack Brand beers give a firm nod to many years of Adnams brewing heritage, at the same time as introducing modern styles, flavours, and recipes.
The ‘Jack Brand,’ or ‘Southwold Jack,’ is Adnams oldest trademark. The design is inspired by some old, refillable ‘Jack Brand’ bottles found in our cellars. Small, dark-brown and branded with cream-coloured paint, they were handcrafted and simple. It was this honesty and simplicity we wanted to reflect in the range.

Blackshore Stout 4.2%

Blackshore is a smooth, easy-drinking stout, named after the black-tarred fishing huts that line Southwold’s harbour. They are individual, characterful and made of sturdy stuff. It is brewed with a hefty mash bill for a rich, broad malt character. You???ll find Pale Ale, Brown, Double Roasted Crystal, and Chocolate malts, alongside Roasted Barley and a hearty helping of oats. This adds a real depth of flavour, that the brewing team are particularly proud of, making it tremendously tasty, but mellow on the finish.

Blackshore Stout is brimming with dark malt flavours of coffee, chocolate, and liquorice, thanks to a generous gesture with the grains. Using oats adds a smoothness and this, coupled with a light hop character, make it easy drinking and exceptionally moreish. Blackshore is hopped with Pilgrim and other British hops for a subtle bitterness and hints of dark hedgerow fruit.

Contains: Barley, Gluten, Oats

GHOST SHIP 0.5%

Ghost Ship 0.5% is no apparition; it really is a low alcohol beer. It has that lovely citrus taste and aroma of Ghost Ship 4.5%, but with almost all of the alcohol smuggled away. Adnams invested in a de-alcoholiser; a reverse osmosis plant which allows the team to brew Ghost Ship 4.5% and then remove the alcohol. We’ve taken that special blend of East Anglian Malt and bold American hops like Citra and brewed a batch of Ghost Ship with this process in mind. This uniquely balanced brew ensures the resulting beer not only tastes amazing, but it as close to the original as we can get, at just 0.5% abv.

Brewed with Pale Ale, Rye Crystal and Cara Malts which add depth, and a blend of Citra and other American hops for that famous citrus finish and flavours of lemon and lime. You’ll get 100% of the taste, at just 0.5% abv. Spooky!
